This playful scene is typical of some of the best articles the Meissen factory ever produced.  ‘White’ pieces, which had no painting or gilded decoration, were first made by Meissen in imitation of the ‘blanc-de-chine’ porcelains of Tê Hua in southern China.  Very appropriate, since Meissen was the first to make true porcelain outside of China.  Often, the ‘white’ pieces were made as table-decorations, replacing those formerly made of wax or sugar.  This piece, with the well for flowers, would still be an elegant addition to any table!

No damage or repairs.  Germany, c.1790.
