This piece is fantastic! And, over 250 years old!! Amazing. This has always been an unusually high quality piece even before it was made. Here’s what I mean… at this period, all fine furniture was custom made. This meant that the patron would confer with the cabinet maker, choosing the size, style, woods, and hardware. Other than the superior quality of the workmanship, there are two further outstanding features. The most obvious is the unusual shape of the panels, both of the cabinet and the lower buffet doors. All those curved lines had to be hand carved…they couldn’t even use a hand plane! The other differentiating characteristic is the choice of woods. There are three exterior woods…each chosen to be the best for its placement. The door panels are walnut, specially selected for its beautiful grain. The legs are oak…chosen for its strength and resistance to insect attacks. The rest of the wood is wild cherry, known in France as merisier, also beautiful, but plain enough to frame the exuberance of the walnut door panels. The top section and the crown molding are all separate from the buffet base, and it is all in excellent, original condition.
